Ayurvedic Treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Is your Stomach Acid Irritate your Food Pipe?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive condition where stomach acid or bile flows back into the esophagus, irritating its lining. It is a digestive disorder where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation. It occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscle that normally prevents backflow, doesn’t close properly.

    Understand your Disease Well

    Causes of GERD

GERD is caused by the weakening or relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle that acts as a valve between the esophagus and stomach. Common contributing factors include:

    1. Obesity – increased abdominal pressure can push acid into the esophagus.

    2. Hiatal hernia – a condition where the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm.

    3. Pregnancy – hormonal changes and pressure on the stomach can cause reflux.

    4. Smoking – reduces LES function and saliva production (saliva helps neutralize acid).

    5. Certain medications – such as:

      • NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin)

      • Calcium channel blockers

      • Anticholinergics

      • Sedatives

    6. Large meals or lying down after eating

    7. Certain foods and drinks

    Symptoms of GERD

Symptoms may vary from person to person, but common ones include:

    • Heartburn (burning sensation in the chest, often after eating or at night)

    • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid

    • Chest pain (non-cardiac)

    • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

    • Chronic cough or sore throat

    • Hoarseness or laryngitis

    • Sensation of a lump in the throat

    • Bad breath

    • Nausea

Diet for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Managing GERD often involves dietary and lifestyle changes. Here’s how to adjust your diet:

Foods to Eat (Help Reduce Reflux):

    • Low-acid fruits: bananas, melons, apples, pears

    • Vegetables: broccoli, green beans, carrots, peas, leafy greens

    • Whole grains: oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat bread

    • Lean proteins: chicken, turkey, fish, egg whites

    • Healthy fats: avocados, nuts (in moderation), olive oil

    • Low-fat dairy: yogurt, skim milk

    • Herbal teas (non-mint), ginger tea

    Lifestyle Tips:

    • Eat smaller, more frequent meals

    • Avoid lying down within 2–3 hours of eating

    • Elevate the head of your bed 6–8 inches

    • Maintain a healthy weight

    • Quit smoking

    • Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce abdominal pressure

    How Treatments Benefited in Disease

    Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)

    • Used cautiously and only if Kapha is involved or there’s indigestion with nausea and heaviness.

    • Not commonly the first choice in hyperacidity but may be used selectively.

    Virechana (Purgation)

    • Most recommended for GERD caused by aggravated Pitta.

    • Removes excess Pitta from the small intestine.

    • Herbs used: Trivrit Lehyam, Avipattikar churna, or Eranda taila (castor oil) with milk or ghee.

    • Helps regulate acid secretion and improve bowel movements.

    Basti (Enema Therapy)

      • If GERD is associated with Vata imbalance (e.g., gas, bloating), Anuvasana Basti (oil enema) and Niruha Basti (decoction enema) are used.

      • Oils like Bala taila or Ashwagandha taila help calm Vata and reduce stress-related acidity.

    Nasya (Nasal Medication)

    • Used if GERD is accompanied by sinus or head-related symptoms (like post-nasal drip or chronic throat irritation).
